Call abandonment rate: measure and improve it
A useful benchmark starts with your own phone system. Calculate abandonment, segment it by time and source, and test changes without inventing an industry average.
What "abandonment" actually means
Decide whether your metric counts calls that reach voicemail, calls abandoned inside a short grace period, spam, and repeat attempts. Keep that definition unchanged when you compare weeks or routing options.
Build a benchmark by trade and source
Separate emergency service calls, planned estimates, existing-customer calls, and spam. Then compare the same categories week over week. A single blended rate can hide a rush period or campaign that needs a different routing rule.
Test the ring window
Short windows can send callers to fallback too quickly; long windows can leave them waiting. Test several settings, include transfer time, and compare completed connections rather than assuming one ring count fits every shop.
Two levers to test
First, route unanswered calls to a clearly identified live or AI service. Second, send a prompt SMS acknowledgement after a miss. Track each option separately so an improved response rate is not mistaken for a booked-job result.
