How to rank in the Google local map pack in 2026

The "map pack" is the three-business box at the top of local Google searches. Ranking there is worth roughly 5x the traffic of ranking #1 in the blue-link results below it. Here's the exact playbook, step by step.

1. Fix the foundation: Google Business Profile

  • Verify your address (or service area) and pin the correct location.
  • Pick one primary category — the most specific one. "Plumber" beats "Contractor" every time.
  • Add up to 9 secondary categories, but only ones you actually service.
  • Fill every services field. Google reads them as ranking signals for long-tail queries.
  • Upload real photos monthly. Profiles with fresh photos out-rank stale ones in the same category.

2. Reviews are the biggest lever

Volume, velocity, and keyword density in reviews all matter. Aim for 8–14 new reviews per month. Ask right after the job, use SMS not email, and reply to every single review — the reply signal alone lifts rankings measurably in most categories.

3. On-page signals for the website

  • City + service in the H1 and title tag of every service page.
  • NAP (name, address, phone) in the footer, matching Google Business Profile exactly.
  • LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema on every page — this is how Google ties your site to your profile.
  • Embedded Google map on the contact page (not required, but a strong trust signal).

4. Citations & consistency

List on Yelp, BBB, Angi, and 15–20 industry-specific directories. The exact business name, address, and phone must match Google Business Profile byte-for-byte. Mismatches suppress rankings faster than almost any other error.

5. Proximity is real — service pages fix it

You'll rank best within ~5 miles of your pin. To expand, publish a landing page per city or suburb you serve, each with local landmarks, testimonials from that area, and unique copy. Duplicating a template with the city name swapped in doesn't work anymore — Google filters it.

6. What doesn't move the needle

  • Buying reviews. Google detects patterns and penalizes hard.
  • Keyword stuffing your business name ("Bob's Plumbing Dallas 24/7"). This is a manual-action trigger.
  • Backlinks from generic directories. Local citations only.
  • Blogging without local intent. A recipe blog on a plumber site does nothing.
